  • Annual Festivities
The anniversary of Greece’s entry into World War II is commemorated today and tomorrow with customary parades and festivities across the country.

Celebrations culminate on October 28 with the annual military parade in Thessaloniki, in the presence of the country's political and military leadership.

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the Axis powers’ declaration of war on Greece.

  • MFA National Celebration Events
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is participating in the celebrations with a series of events organized by the Diplomatic and Historical Archive Department of the Ministry.

Today, Foreign Minister Dimitris Droutsas delivered an address, which was followed by the screening of a documentary film, titled Heroes Fight Like Greeks - Winston Churchill’s famous words.

The film features rare footage, including the flag-raising ceremony on the Rock of the Acropolis. An exhibition of WW2 photographs, documents, and memorabilia will be inaugurated.

  • The Singer of Victory
The Italian attack on Greece and the national rally, followed by military victories on the mountains of Albania, produced a mass spirit calling for resistance, national dignity, and independence.

Legendary Greek singer Sofia Vembo became the absolute symbol of this spirit. Her performance of patriotic songs praising the fighting nation, as well as satirical ones taunting the invader, became a major inspiration for the fighting soldiers and a point of reference for Greek music of the WW2.

Her engagement to the national cause brought her the title of Greek Army Major. YouTube: Sofia Vembo - Pedia tis Ellados Pedia (Sons of Greece)
