The 37th anniversary of the restoration of democracy in Greece, after the collapse of the 7-year military dictatorship, was celebrated on Sunday, July 24, at the Presidential Mansion.

It was hosted by President of the Hellenic Republic Karolos Papoulias and attended by the country's political and military leadership as well as several guests. In his address, President Papoulias linked recent developments in the field of economy with the spirit of struggle against any form of dictatorship.

Referring to the outcome of the extraordinary eurozone summit, Papoulias said that "the economic crisis is also a political one" and that "although delayed, the decisions taken within the summit constitute a step towards European integration."

Furthermore, he stressed that the Greek struggle for freedom, 37 years ago, is "still in process and has never been in vain."
