Socialist International (SI) President and Pasok leader George Papandreou attended a Council meeting of the Socialist International, held on January 23-24 in San José, Costa Rica. Papandreou opened the proceedings of meeting together with the President of Costa Rica, Laura Chinchilla.

The agenda of the SI Council included issues such as how to redefine markets in a democracy and overcome the crisis via growth in the real economy, as well as the role of the social-democratic movement in tackling climate change, the tasks after Durban and the road to Rio+20 UN Conference on Sustainable Development in June and COP18 in Qatar in November-December 2012.
