Prime Minister Antonis Samaras held a telephone conversation with his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan, on June 22. The Turkish premier congratulated Samaras upon the assumption of his duties, while both sides stressed the need for close cooperation between the two countries in many sectors.
The two premiers also decided to reactivate the Greek-Turkish High-Level Cooperation Council, which was formed in 2010 but has been inactive for some time now. The details of the Council’s first meeting -to be held soon in Ankara- will be agreed by Foreign Minister Dimitris Avramopoulos and his Turkish counterpart Mehmet Davutoglu, in the context of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation (BSEC) meeting to take place in Istanbul on June 25-26.
Meanwhile, the premier will not attend the forthcoming European Union Council in Brussels on June 28, as he is recovering from a serious eye operation. Greece will be represented by Foreign Minister Dimitris Avramopoulos, outgoing Finance Minister George Zanias, Development, Infrastructure, Transport and Networks Minister Kostis Hatzidakis, and Alternate Finance Minister Christos Staikouras.
