The former Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), Efthimios E. Mitropoulos, was presented with the honorary award of the Knight Commander of the Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George (KCMG).

The badge of order was presented to Mitropoulos in recognition, by Her Majesty the Queen and the Government of the United Kingdom, of his services to international maritime safety, security and protection of the marine environment.

The badge of honour was presented to Mitropoulos by UK Shipping Minister Mike Penning at a reception at the official residence of the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, on June 20.

The UK honours system recognizes exceptional achievement and service to the nation. Non-British nationals who have made a significant contribution to the UK can also be considered for UK honours. These awards are classed as honorary and granted on the advice of the Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO).
