The new parliament which resulted from the general elections of June 17 was sworn in  today. According to the Constitution, a new government must receive a vote of confidence from Parliament within 15 days following the prime minister’s oath of office.

The vote of confidence procedure is due to be completed at midnight on July 6.The new Speaker of Parliament will be elected tomorrow; former minister Evangelos Meimarakis is New Democracy’s appointed candidate for the post.

Seven deputy speakers will also be elected by the same vote, of which the first three will come from the party with the greatest number of seats - in this case New Democracy - and the rest from the next four parties.
