Today marks the 38th anniversary since the restoration of democracy in Greece, following the collapse of the 7-year military dictatorship.

In his message on the occasion, Hellenic Republic President Karolos Papoulias stresses that all Greeks bear a heavy burden of responsibility to ensure that the sacrifices of those who fought for democracy were not in vain. Their stance should become a paradigm for the Greek society that is being so severely tested, especially for the younger generation.

He added that the anniversary is an opportunity for "Greeks to think of ways to escape the quagmire. There are answers, but more than anything it is necessary to seek a collective, definitive and just one." This year, the President had decided to cancel the customary reception, noting that this should be seen as an opportunity for "contemplation."
