Speaking after the traditional, October 28, military parade in Thessaloniki, President Papoulias expressed optimism that Greece would overcome the crisis, but this must happen in an expedient manner, because the "Greek people have given everything." He also stressed that things are changing in Europe, since it is acknowledged that the country has achieved more than Ireland, Spain and Italy and there is hope for the future.
The president made special reference to the bravery of the Greek people during World War II, noting that today they have the same willingness to struggle against all odds as in the glorious past.
He concluded by saying that "the hope, which we all have inside [...] will make possible what once was considered, and is still considered today, impossible."
