- Il Sogno: Opera & Fashion
Il sogno (i.e. The Dream) will be held at the Athens Conservatory today (21.5). Based on a concept of the journalist Isma Toulatos and directed by the multi-talented Konstantinos Rigos, this season's production aspires to combine opera with haute couture. This year's special guest is the great lady of Greek fashion, Loukia. Arias will be performed by acclaimed sopranos Vassiliki Karayanni, Myrsini Margariti, Maria Kokka and Artemis Bogri, tenor Nikos Stefanou and bass Tassos Apostolou.
- Music Inspires Literature @ Onassis Cultural Centre
As part of the longer project Unknown Hellenism, that seeks to support interaction between different art-forms, the Onassis Cultural Centre has invited three writers, George Koropoulis, Michael Ganas and Dimitris Kalokyris, to write short stories inspired by music. On May 22, author Dimitris Kalokyris will read his work on the Upper Stage. Entrance to the event will be free and on a strictly first come, first served basis.
- Landscape Architect Peter Walker @ Megaron
Peter Walker will give a lecture at the Athens Concert Hall. Walker’s masterpiece is the National 9/11 Memorial at the World Trade Center site in New York. He is invited by the Greek Welfare Foundation for Social and Cultural Affairs and his lecture “A life in design and two memorials” is part of the Megaron Plus lectures.
- Athens Digital Festival
The international Athens Digital Arts Festival (ADAF) will be held at the Diplareios School, Athens, from May 21 to 24. Founded in 2005, ADAF celebrates digital culture through an annual gathering, bringing together a global community of artists, working with the digital medium and audiences. This year’s edition is dedicated to Public Space_s; as network and communication technologies have radically altered our relationship with the public space, the festival explores the meaning of the public in the digital and the urban environment. It features 120 artists, ten workshops for children and adults, seven musical events, as well as screenings from other festivals.
- African Festival
The 14th African Food Music and Handicrafts Festival will be held on May 23-24 at the premises of the Moraitis School, Athens. African countries participating in the festival, among them Algeria, Burundi, DR Congo, Egypt, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Libya, Morocco, Namibia, Senegal, Zimbabwe and many more will be showcasing and promoting the rich and diverse African culture and heritage. This year’s festival features cuisine, handicrafts, music, dance and fashion shows. Funds raised from the event will be donated to charity organizations.
