Professor Oswyn Murray, emeritus Fellow at the University of Oxford is giving a lecture today (11.05) on The Western Traditions of Ancient History at the British School at Athens.

Since the 18th century, the study of Ancient history has focused on the concepts of imperialism and liberty. The lecture focuses on a less known aspect in the study of Ancient History, that of ‘Sacred History’. It explores how in the 19th century, those three strands helped to preserve Ancient History from the nationalism of western ideas of ‘Modern History’.
