Greece bowed out of the FIFA World Cup 2010 after a 2-0 defeat to Argentina on June 22, which marked the end of the first round of the tournament.

Despite their defeat, Greece managed to contain Argentina and Lionel Messi for the best part of 80 minutes and even threaten their opponents a couple of times.

On June 23, coach Otto Rehhagel announced his departure after nine years that, among others, saw Greece making it twice to the finals of the European championship and even winning of the Euro 2004 (photo).
He is to be succeeded by Portuguese coach Fernando Santos.
