Prime Minister George Papandreou on his official visit to Tripoli (June 9) met with the Libyan leader Muammar Kadhafi and signed a strategic economic cooperation Memorandum of Understanding, aiming at boosting cooperation in various fields including telecommunications, transportation, energy, tourism, farm products, archaeology, the construction of infrastructure works, mainly port works, real estate, pharmaceutical industries, health and education.
Both countries have set strict deadlines for the implementation of the agreement and the first assessment of its implementation is scheduled in three months. They also discussed the Cyprus problem, Greek-Turkish relations, and the Palestinian- Israeli crisis.
Papandreou stated that the agreement is a clear message for the consolidation of relations between Greece and Libya, which go back to Kadhafi’s friendship with the premier’s father, the late Andreas Papandreou.
