Both the Greek government and the Parliament condemned yesterday the disproportionate use of violence by the Israeli military forces against activists on board a small fleet of vessels – two of which were Greek - heading for Gaza.
A foreign ministry statement issued on the same day noted that according to official Israeli announcement, there are no Greek citizens among the victims and injured.
Prime Minister George Papandreou stressed in a statement that "today's tragic incident …is condemnable and unacceptable," adding that "the security of Israel and the entire region …is aided only by negotiations and compliance with Security Council resolutions."
The Greek government also decided to withdraw from the joint air force exercise and to postpone the visit to Athens of the Head of the Israeli Air Force General Staff, Alternate Foreign Minister Dimitris Droutsas said in a statement, after he summoned the Israeli ambassador.
Government Spokesman George Petalotis has asked for due process to be followed concerning the protection of the Greek nationals in the convoy, as well as the three journalists who have been arrested.
