Probonas Woods Re-visited
The Probonas Woods, located in Perissos, at the northern end of the city centre, have been converted into a public space with a functional, educational, sporting and aesthetic character, with the aim of creating both an ecological recreation and environmental awareness park.
The transformation of the Woods into a recreation hub for local residents was part of the Green Charter of Athens, which was voted in March 2009, and included various greenery projects around the city centre.
Probonas Woods - originally bequeathed to the municipality of Athens in 1950 by doctor Dimitrios Probonas –was until recently used as a plant nursery.
The regeneration started in July 2009 and included the planting of 5,160 trees and shrubs, a green labyrinth of 1,150 plants and a windbreak shelterbelt.

Landscape Management
Greece is a signatory to the European Landscape Convention (ELC), which was adopted in Florence in 2000.
The convention aims at promoting the protection of European lands, their management and planning, as well as organising cooperation, at the European level, on issues pertaining to terrain.
Speaking at the parliamentary vote, where it was ratified- in February of this year, Prime Minister George Papandreou said:
"This will allow Greece to use the considerable international experience in landscape management. As a country with a wealth of scenery, we will greatly benefit from protecting our landscapes."
To mark this ratification, the Panhellenic Association of Landscape Architects invited Maguelonne Dejean-Pons, head of the Cultural Heritage, Landscape, and Spatial Planning division at the European Council, who delivered a lecture on the convention on May 28.
