The President of the Hellenic Republic Karolos Papoulias was given a guided tour to the Acropolis of Athens, witnessing the result of a restoration project which was completed this year following a long period of delicate interventions for replacing missing parts and researching the monument’s structure.

An ambitious restoration programme had begun as early as the beginning of the 19th century; however, engineers of that time had chosen iron as the main material for joining fragments of architectural members or for increasing the durability of others, thus creating additional damage, caused by rust.
The current restoration project was undertaken by the Acropolis Restoration Service, headed by Mary Ioannidou, said she she was "delighted to deliver a work which makes every Greek proud."
