The depletion of traditional fossil fuels is a given fact and scientists of all fields are trying to come up with innovative ways to produce energy and the use of fuel cells powered by cheese by-products such as whey is one of them. Research conducted by Dr Georgia Antonopoulou at the University of Patras has shown that whey is rich in lactose, which can be consumed by bacteria contained within a fuel cell in order to produce an electric current.
This technique has a double advantage, because it constitutes a way of processing raw waste water and generating electricity at the same time.
Nevertheless, the method is still being perfected because there is a lack of investment in materials used in this type of renewable source of energy.
