Economy, Competitiveness and Shipping Minister Louka Katseli announced yesterday that 22 investment projects worth €2 billion will be implemented via private-public partnerships (PPPs). According to Katseli, the PPPs mechanism will be revised thoroughly and changes will also be made to the way the projects receive financing.
Henceforward, all projects will have to obtain an initial nod from the European Investment Bank, in an effort to secure the sustainability of financing for all partners involved (private investors and commercial lenders).

The much awaited immigrants’ participation in municipal elections is a fact following a new legislative amendment passed by the Government. According to an interior ministry circular, all eligible immigrants can register until August 31 2010 – the previous deadline was June 30 - to register at their local municipality’s election office should they want to vote in the upcoming ballot on November 14. Interior Minister Yiannis Ragousis stressed that “the participation of legally residing long term residents is a historic event.”

A new synergy between the Stavros Niarchos Foundation and the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare was announced yesterday by the Ministry’s Deputy Minister Fofi Gennimata.
The Foundation will grant a €5 million project which plans to modernize intensive care units in children’s hospitals and paediatric departments in general hospitals, as well as provide upgraded healthcare for children.

New school maps of Greece won recently the first prizein their category at an international competition held by the International Cartographic Association (ICA) in Santiago, Chile.
The new school maps were designed by the Geography Department of the University of the Aegean.
This is an effort to enhance the educational process in Greek schools at home and abroad. Digital copies of the cartographic material will be distributed to pupils for in-depth study.

A cross-border police cooperation agreement was signed in Sofia on Wednesday by visiting Greek Citizens' Protection Minister Mihalis Chryssohoidis and Bulgarian Interior Minister Cvetan Cvetanov.
