Praised as ‘a magnificent scholarly journal’ by Choice magazine, Journal of Modern Greek Studies (JMGS) is a scholarly periodical that focuses exclusively on modern Greece with critical analysis on Greek social, cultural, and political affairs.

Sponsored by the Modern Greek Studies Association (MGSA) and published by Johns Hopkins University Press, JMGS is a biannual journal that features essays, written in English, by leading scholars in the field of Modern Greek Studies from North America and around the world. Focusing on a broad historical expanse that stretches from late Byzantium until the present, the JMGS is highly interdisciplinary, publishing peer-reviewed articles from scholars who represent a diversity of fields within the humanities, the arts, and the social sciences.

It should be noted that a page on the JMGS hosts current and past issues and two extra features: “In Focus”, which contains supplementary material that accompany the printed issue, that include podcasts, photographs, music, videos, and poetry readings; “Occasional Papers“, which hosts interviews, position papers, reports on collaborative projects and other material on current matters relating to Greece, Cyprus, Greek and Greeks worldwide selected by the editors.

The latest issue of the Journal (Volume 34, n. 2/ October 2016) includes 6 articles, that is: Some Debts Can Never Be Repaid: The Archaeo-politics of the Crisis by Yannis Hamilakis; The Song of Songs in the Rhythms of George Seferis by Katerina Stergiopoulou; A British International Humanitarianism? The Modern Greek Studies Association was founded in 1968 by a group of intellectuals and scholars, to showcase the merits of the Modern Greek tradition and contemporary Greek culture. It has evolved since then to an American-based, non-profit academic organization, dedicated to the promotion of Modern Greek Studies in the United States and Canada and conversant internationally on all issues, historical and contemporary, which pertain to Greek matters. Interdisciplinary in orientation, the MGSA seeks to stimulate the discovery and diffusion of knowledge about the language, literature, arts, history, politics, economy, and society of modern Greece, Cyprus, and the Greek diaspora.
