The Mediterranean diet has received a UNESCO intangible cultural heritage status, following its inclusion in the relevant list approved during the 5th session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage held in Nairobi, Kenya, on November 17-19.

The proposal to include the Mediterranean diet in the UNESCO list had been submitted by the governments of Greece, Spain, Italy and Morocco.

The List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding is a list of cultural elements whose viability is at risk despite the efforts of the communities and groups that practice them.

In order to be inscribed on this list, states must pledge to implement special protection plans.
