In this week’s Events & Culture Agenda: Athens Photo Festival at Benaki Museum, Greek & Canadian Artists’ Exhibition at TAF, Greek Jazz Panorama, Athens Pride 2016 and Syros Triathlon.
- Photography | Athens Photo Festival 2016
Athens Photo Festival, the leading international festival of photography and related media in Southeastern Europe, will take place at the Benaki Museum (June 3- July 31). This year, the Festival’s theme, under the title “[mis/dis]placed”, is aimed at investigating how collective consciousness and individual perception and position are shaped, in relation to the fast-changing global situation, intertwining both politics and poetics. In particular, it is interested in raising questions about the prevailing notions of place and memory as fundamental elements of identity formation while reassessing the role that the means of visualizing can play within these concepts. Founded in 1987, the Athens Photo Festival is the longest-running festival of photography in Greece, and one of the five oldest of its kind in the world.
- Fine Arts | Greek & Canadian Artists’ Exhibition
Greek and Canadian artists meet and transform the metamatic:TAF (The Art Foundation) rooms in an exhibition titled “Tomorrow is another day, Tomorrow is not another today” (June 2- 25). The curators Vivi Perysinaki (Greece) and Scott McGovern (Canada) have invited artists from their respective countries to use sculpture, printmaking, textiles, site-specific installations as well as immersive audio/video environments, so as to create a cross-cultural dialogue, surprise, provoke discussion and pose questions about what life was, is, or will be.
- Music | Greek Jazz Panorama
Now in its third year, the Greek Jazz Panorama / New Generation has become a major event on the Greek jazz scene, presenting the next generation of talented musicians as they progress in leaps and bounds. For three consecutive nights (June 9-11), on the Onassis Cultural Centre roof terrace, the new generation combos in the Festival line-up will showcase the dynamism of the Greek contemporary improvisation scene and the bright future that lies ahead. The combos in question are the Next Step Quintet, the Stelios Chatzikaleas Quintet and the Stephanos Chytiris Flux Project, all of which will be joining forces with international soloists whose names are to be announced.
- People | Athens Pride Festival & Parade
Athens Pride 2016 festival and parade will take place in the Greek capital, June 6, with the support of 17 Embassies. Founded in 2006, the primary mission of the Athens Pride non-profit society is “to advance [the visibility] of LGBT people in society, and to support their demands in Greece and abroad through the organization and production of a ‘Pride’ festival.” Specifically, the theme of this year’s festival “Women are Made, Not Born / Men are Made, Not Born” pays special attention to the challenges transgender people encounter.
- Sports | Syros Triathlon
The 1st Trimore Syros Triathlon will kick off, June 10, with a scientific workshop taking place in Apollon Theatre – Hermoupolis, with the participation of four distinguished athletes from the triathlon world: Tonia Machaira, Vassilis Krommidas, Christos Garefis and Alice Hector.
