At the southernmost tip of Attica, where the Attic sky meets the Aegean Sea, proudly stands the Temple of Poseidon, the mythical sea god, perched on the steep cliffs of Cape Sounion. The Temple of Poseidon in Sounion, which attracts thousands of visitors from all over the world every year, has become even more impressive thanks to its new lighting. The installation of the innovative, state-of-the-art lighting system highlights the archaeological and architectural significance of the monument in a unique way, without disturbing the visual experience of visitors to the archaeological site during the day.

Repatriation of three Greek antiquities

Three Greek antiquities that had been removed from Greece at an unknown time were repatriated from Atlanta, USA. These are as follows:

1. Part of a marble tombstone. This is a work of a provincial workshop, probably of Thessalian origin, and dates to the beginning of the 4th century BC.

2. Part of an Attic funerary temple made of Pentelic marble with a relief, dating from around 330-320 BC.

3. Bronze statuette of a naked young man, probably an athlete, which could be dated to the end of the 2nd century BC.

The three ancient objects were delivered to the Consulate of Greece in Atlanta in order to be returned to Greece. This repatriation is indicative of the trend that has been developing worldwide in recent years, as a result of awareness-raising and public information campaigns on the need to preserve cultural heritage and return antiquities to the countries where they belong.

Greek researcher Marianna Rapsomaniki leads a team that created an artificial intelligence model for the pathological analysis of cancer

An advanced artificial intelligence model capable of contributing to the pathological analysis and diagnosis of cancer has been created by a team of researchers, led by Greek researcher Marianna Rapsomaniki, from the Biomedical Data Science Center of the University of Lausanne and the Lausanne University Hospital in Switzerland. In order to overcome the common obstacle of lack of sufficient histological data to diagnose cancer in a patient, the research team created the artificial intelligence model called "VirtualMultiplexer", which generates images of biopsies and specifically of tissue analysis through tissue staining, a technique used to diagnose cancer in the laboratory. Thus, using Generative AI and through its training on numerous images of tissues analysed in the laboratory by applying dyes, the model generates detailed images of a cancer tissue and the information it carries at the molecular level, an element very important for the precise identification of the disease.

The Museum of Ancient Eleftherna in Crete is celebrates its 8th birthday this year hosting the periodic exhibition "Picasso in Crete: the joy of life," which will last until October 20. The 62 works of Pablo Picasso have been "joined" with the permanent exhibits of the Museum of Ancient Eleftherna, and what emerges from that union, according to Picasso's daughter, Paloma, and Professor Nikos Stampolidis, is the eternal and profound depiction of the joy of life.

Professor Stampolidis, who is responsible for creating the Archaeological Park of Eleutherna and the Museum, said that Paloma Picasso and he selected those pieces of her father's work where nature, animals and the Mediterranean light danced in harmony with the ancient Greek myths. "We chose the Museum of Ancient Eleftherna as a site for the exhibition, within a magical archaeological space where the ancient breeze still blows and whispers secrets of the joy of life," he said.

A film entitled "Elizabethan Theatre" created by twenty students from the 6th Experimental Intercultural Primary School of Eleftherio-Kordelio in Thessaloniki, was declared as the best Film or Animation on the theme of Shakespeare by young directors aged 7-11, by the independent charity organization 'Shakespeare Birthplace Trust' and won the "Best Animated Film Award" at the Moscow International Children's Film Festival. Through historical elements, drawings, sketches, pictures, and colorful dolls, the children depicted the creation of London's first theaters, how they attracted the interest of the world and what was the context in which William Shakespeare one of the most important playwrights lived and created.
Greek students won one gold, two silver and three bronze medals at the 65th International Mathematical Olympiad, held in Bath, UK, from July 11 to 22, 2024, with 108 countries taking part. As the Hellenic Mathematical Society points out in a Press release, the strong performance of Greek students in international competitions continued this year, as all participating students were selected in a tough and demanding two-day competition. More specifically, the students who took part in the Olympiad were selected, as every year, through the Panhellenic Mathematics Competition organized by the Hellenic Mathematical Society since 1934, with the participation of 12,000 students from all over Greece.
Alonissos Underwater Museum: the Parthenon of shipwrecks

Alonissos Underwater Museum, Greece's first underwater museum, is home to one of the largest shipwrecks of the classical era, dating from 425 to 420 BC. The wreck was discovered in 1985 by Dimitris Mavrikis at a depth of 25 meters off the island of Peristera. The ship's unique size makes it one of the largest merchant vessels of its time, measuring 30 meters long and 10 meters wide, and carrying around 3,000 amphorae filled with celebrated wines. The wreck is of exceptional archaeological importance due to the large number of intact amphorae that have survived to the present day, and is often described as “the Parthenon of shipwrecks”.

Exhibitions dedicated to the 50 years from the Restoration of Democracy

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Restoration of Democracy in Greece, two important exhibitions on democracy are being held in Greece. The National Gallery - Alexandros Soutsos Museum is organizing and hosting a new, topical exhibition titled "Democracy", which traces the relationship between art and political history in Southern Europe. Also, the National Library of Greece, the General State Archives and the Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation co-organize the exhibition "From Dictatorship to Democracy". The exhibition presents unique archival documents and rich audiovisual material, concerning the dictatorship and the anti-dictatorship struggle in the first year of the Metapolitefsi period (the period of transition after the fall of the military junta in 1974), with the major institutional changes, and more generally the social and cultural Metapolitefsi up to the early years of the 1980s.

The Petrified Forest of Lesvos: a unique natural monument

Petrified trunks, scattered over an area of 150 square kilometres surrounded by the settlements of Sigri, Eressos and Antissa in western Lesvos, provide the most impressive evidence of the "cosmogony" that marked the geological history of the Aegean basin 20 million years ago. Intense volcanic eruptions resulted in the ejection of a huge amount of ash, which in a short period of time covered the area where the Petrified Forest is located today. Visit the 4 Parks of the Petrified Forest of Lesvos and live a unique experience: the Sigri Park, the Plaka Park, the Bali-Alonia Park, and the Nissiopi Marine Park, the first marine fossil park in Greece, which includes the Nisiopi Island and the surrounding marine area.

The sailing vessel Pytheas, with captain George Kesses as its sole crew member, followed the Olympic Flame to Marseille. During the journey, it carried the message of world peace and brotherhood to all the stopovers in Southern Italy, Sicily, Corsica and Southern France, where Hellenism has left a historical legacy through its seafaring heritage. George Kesses met with the Greek communities in Rigio, Naples, Bonifacio, Marseille, Nice, Carghese and Messina. He reaffirmed the strong ties between Piraeus and Marseille with the symbolic presentation of the flag of the Municipality of Piraeus to the Deputy Mayor of France's largest port, Michèle Rubirola.

Volunteer team embellishes the neighborhoods and villages of Rhodes

For about two years now, residents and visitors to the island of Rhodes have been seeing impressive paintings popping up in previously overlooked spots in the island's neighbourhoods, adding colour and vibrance to the urban landscape; they are the work of a group started in June 2022, when two locals of the island, driven to brighten up their neighbourhood for their children, began to put their own touches on the OTE's telephone cabinets. The group grew to about 10 people now, the paintings multiplied, commissions from schools and residents increased, and their interventions spread throughout the island.

Sometimes inspired by Rhodian ceramic art, sometimes by Greek mythology and history and the landmarks of Rhodes, and other times just to "tell" a story in their own way, they make sure that each piece fits the spot where it will be located, in which they even choose materials that can withstand the passage of time and weather.

Marble lekythoi and loutrophoroi appear from the late 5th and throughout the 4th century BC in ancient Attic cemeteries, as grave markers, set up in family burial plots. They are the exclusive products of the Attic marble carving workshops.

Literary messages and writings on illegal advertising signboards that had been removed from the public space by the relevant crews of the Municipality of Chania in the past, were recycled and reused in order to provide a trigger for discussion among passers-by. This is the implementation of the second cycle of the program Epana-thesis, in the context of which the signs returne to a new cycle of use, "host" texts by writers, quotes from poetic works, questions that seek a response, surprising passers-by in public space, next to iconic sites, open spaces and parks.

Aegina, an island with a long history, played an important role in several periods of Greek history. It was a maritime superpower that dominated the waters of ancient Greece and beyond during the Archaic period. In the late 6th and early 5th century BC, the wall of the ancient city was built, enclosing the two harbours, the military harbour with the nave for the warships and the commercial harbour. At the same time, the temple of Apollo and other temples dominated the hill of Kolona, and the theater and the stadium of Aegina were built. The new app, Aigina Geoculture, takes you on a journey through time and the ancient port facilities of Aegina.
