For three nights, on the 18th, 19th, and 20th June, the open air 'Dionysus' theater stage of the Aranya 2026 International Theater Festival, in China's Hebei province, was transformed into a marketplace to host the Greek play “Pitted Prunes,” directed by the award-winning director Noemi Vassiliadou.

The warm response of the Chinese audience to this production, which premiered at the iconic Athens & Epidaurus Festival in 2025, left no one unmoved. Posts on Chinese social media from spectators who attended the performance hailed it as the best of the festival. The performance was supported by the Embassy of Greece in China.
In a recent interview about the performance with Chinese paper China Daily, the Ambassador of Greece to China, Dr. Evgenios Kalpyris, stressed: “Theater plays an important role in the cultural relationship between China and Greece. Let's not forget that for Greeks, theater has always been not only a form of entertainment, but also a means of continuous education". In the same interview, Noemi Vassiliadou added “When Pitted Prunes traveled beyond Greece to China, I did not originally imagine such a journey. The idea still feels "like a dream".

A Summer of Culture in Greece: International Arts Events Across Iconic Destinations in June 2026

A series of important cultural events in cinema, visual arts, dance, music, poetry, and wellness with an international footprint will take place in June across Athens, Hydra, Corfu, Piraeus, Heraklion (Crete), Tinos, Rhodes, and Mystras, with the support and under the auspices of the Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO).

These events highlight the diversity of Greece’s tourism offerings and help further international recognition of the destinations, especially among visitors with special cultural interests.

Specifically:

From June 22 to 25, 2026, Hydra will host “Art Cinema Hydra Summer 2026,” an international cultural program featuring artist residencies, exhibitions, film screenings, creative workshops, artist meetings, and international collaborations with participants from Greece, the United States, India, and the Middle East. The events are part of Hydra’s annual cultural program and are complemented by the island’s historic festival “Miaoulia,” held on June 27 and 28. The initiative aims to strengthen Hydra’s international profile and, more broadly, Greece’s position as a contemporary high-quality cultural tourism destination, with an emphasis on creativity, collaboration, and authentic cultural experience.

From June 25 to 28, 2026, the Dora Stratou Theatre in Athens will host the 12th Bollywood and Multicultural Dance Festival, a culturally distinctive event within the city’s summer artistic program. The festival aims to promote Greece as a crossroads of cultures, highlighting the performing arts of dance and music, as well as the spirit of peaceful coexistence beyond geographical boundaries. Its program includes workshops, performances, presentations, lectures, bazaars, and more, featuring dancers, musicians, singers, and cultural figures from Greece and abroad.

On June 27, 2026, at the Old Fortress of Corfu, the Ionian Islands Symphony Orchestra will present, for the first time, a symphonic tribute to Lavrentis Machairitsas. This landmark event is expected to contribute to the promotion of cultural tourism and further enhance Corfu’s image as a leading travel destination. The orchestra’s Contemporary Music Ensemble, under the direction of Ilias Gogidis, will offer a new interpretation of the songwriter’s work, blending rock, “entechno” Greek music, and symphonic sound for the first time. The concert will feature Dionysis Tsaknis, Giannis Zouganelis, Kitrina Podilata, Mirela Pahou, and Panos Mouzourakis.
