Thessaloniki is a city in motion—shaped by centuries of history and the pressures of today’s globalised world. As transformations continue to unfold across its social, spatial, and environmental landscape, many of these changes remain undocumented or difficult to access.

📍The Thessaloniki Social Atlas is a new, free online platform that brings together scientific research and public knowledge. With texts, maps, and urban data, it offers a critical, evidence-based look at the city’s ongoing evolution, with a special emphasis on how historical traits are being reshaped in the present.

📍This bilingual (Greek and English) resource is open to everyone—from local residents and curious readers to researchers and policy-makers.

📍The project aims to democratize knowledge, make complex research accessible, and support public dialogue on how Thessaloniki is changing—and what that means for its future.

The Center for Hellenic Studies, UC San Diego, together with the Hellenic Cultural Society of San Diego and Thomas Gallant's graduate students are organizing a conference on March 27 to celebrate the work of renowned historian Thomas Gallant, in view of his retirement.

Thomas W. Gallant holds the Nicholas Family Endowed Chair in Modern Greek History and is and Distinguished Professor of History and Archaeology in the History Department and the Center for Hellenic Studies at the University of California, San Diego.

Thomas Gallant is a historian known for his expertise in modern Greek history, archaeology, and social history. His research focuses on themes such as banditry, violence, colonialism, and transnational history, particularly in the Mediterranean world. Gallant has written extensively on 19th- and 20th-century Greece, including topics like the Greek War of Independence, rural society, and the experiences of Greek migrants. Some of his notable works include:

➡️Modern Greece (part of the Short History of the Modern World series);
➡️Experiencing Dominion: Culture, Identity, and Power in the British Mediterranean;
➡️The Edinburgh History of the Greeks, 1768-1913: The Long 19th Century.

He has also contributed to the study of Greek diaspora communities and the broader socio-political transformations in the eastern Mediterranean.
