An event titled "Terrorism and Maritime Insecurity: Collective Efforts to Counter Terrorism in the Maritime Domain" was held at United Nations Headquarters on the sidelines of the 2026 United Nations Counter-Terrorism Week.
The event was co-organized by the Permanent Missions of Malta and Greece to the United Nations, the Counter-Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate (CTED), the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT), and the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
Greece's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Aglaia Balta, stressed that maritime security has become an integral component of the global security architecture.
Ambassador Balta noted that, in an "increasingly complex and asymmetric threat environment," safeguarding freedom of navigation and maritime security is essential to maintaining international peace and security. She emphasized that the maritime domain remains a cornerstone of global trade and economic development, facilitating the transport of energy, food, and other essential goods worldwide.
