𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐭𝐨𝐧'𝐬 𝐡𝐢𝐝𝐝𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐞: 𝐀 𝟏𝟗𝟐𝟗 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐌𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭 𝐀𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐌𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐨𝐫𝐚A visual treasure, which had lain “buried” for decades, was discovered at Princeton University in the United States in 2017: it is a record of the first known mission conducted by American travelers to Mount Athos and Meteora. A 33-minute film and 336 photographs are what survive from that journey. The group of travelers consisted of Russian émigré, painter and explorer Vladimir "Vovo" Perfilieff; photographer, talented cinematographer and later Oscar winner Floyd Crosby, and the architect e Gordon McCormick. They were accompanied by young Anastasios Hatzimitsos, an interpreter from Thessaloniki. In contrast to most other expeditions to Mount Athos, this one was not religious in nature; the American expedition focused on daily life at the monastic community, the monks’ ministrations, and the people who lived in the community. The photographs consist mainly of portraits, images of group activities like the grape and walnut harvests, meals etc, and shots of several monasteries’ interiors and exteriors.Part of the photographic archive discovered is currently on display at the Cultural Center of the Meteora Municipality (until 15.01.24). The material was first displayed at the Mount Athos Center, in an exhibition organized by the Center, in collaboration with the Department of Art and Archaeology of Princeton University.>>> read more 👉 www.agioritikiestia.gr/en/no-woman-s-land-from-princeton-to-mount-athos-and-the-meteora-in-1929Αγιορειτική Εστία; Department of Art and Archaeology, Princeton University ...
