In its 2026 European Semester assessment, the European Commission concluded that Greece no longer faces macroeconomic imbalances, marking its exit from the monitoring framework for the first time since the sovereign debt crisis. More specifically, the European Commission notes in its assessment that vulnerabilities related to public and external debt have declined significantly in recent years. It highlights that sustained economic growth, fiscal surpluses, stronger bank balance sheets, and the implementation of reforms have played a decisive role in reducing the risks that had characterized the Greek economy for many years.

At the same time, the OECD forecasts continued strong growth, with GDP expected to increase by 1.9% in 2026 and 2.0% in 2027. Investments are set to be boosted by Recovery and Resilience Facility funds, while employment growth and tax reductions are expected to support household consumption. These developments reflect the progress achieved in recent years through sustained growth, fiscal stability, reforms, and a stronger financial sector.

The Greek Ministry of National Economy and Finance described the development as a landmark achievement, underscoring its strong symbolic value and its tangible significance for the country's economic progress.

One of the most meaningful moments of this year's Conference was the participation of Maira Myrogianni, Secretary General for Greeks Abroad and Public Diplomacy, in the panel:

BrainReconnect – Diaspora: The Power of Connection

We would like to warmly thank Ms. Myrogianni both for her participation and for the patronage provided by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to the BrainReGain Annual Conference 2026.

During her intervention, she highlighted the strategic importance of the Greek diaspora, emphasizing that Greece possesses an invaluable global network of people who maintain strong ties with their homeland and wish to contribute to its future.

As she noted:
"We have half of Greece outside Greece in terms of population. And we have people who want to stay connected to Greece and contribute to the motherland."

Ms. Myrogianni also stressed the importance of preserving and promoting the Greek language worldwide, referring to the recent recognition by UNESCO of the World Greek Language Day as a celebration of the contribution of the Greek language to global culture.

At the same time, she presented the growing role of diaspora engagement in areas such as science, technology, innovation and public diplomacy, highlighting the need to strengthen connections between Greeks around the world and Greece itself.
At BrainReGain, we firmly believe that the relationship with the Greek diaspora extends beyond return and repatriation. It is about building lasting bridges of knowledge, collaboration, culture and opportunity that can contribute meaningfully to the future of our country.

Μία από τις σημαντικότερες στιγμές του φετινού Συνεδρίου ήταν η συμμετοχή της Γενικής Γραμματέως Απόδημου Ελληνισμού και Δημόσιας Διπλωματίας, Μάιρας Μυρογιάννη, στο πάνελ:

BrainReconnect – Διασπορά: Η δύναμη της σύνδεσης

Θα θέλαμε να την ευχαριστήσουμε θερμά τόσο για τη συμμετοχή της όσο και για την αιγίδα που παρείχε το Υπουργείο Εξωτερικών στο Ετήσιο Συνέδριο BrainReGain 2026.

Κατά την τοποθέτησή της, η κ. Μυρογιάννη ανέδειξε τη στρατηγική σημασία του παγκόσμιου ελληνισμού, επισημαίνοντας ότι η Ελλάδα διαθέτει ένα μοναδικό δίκτυο ανθρώπων, γνώσης, εμπειρίας και επιρροής πέρα από τα σύνορά της.

Όπως χαρακτηριστικά ανέφερε:
«Έχουμε μισή Ελλάδα έξω από την Ελλάδα σε πληθυσμό. Και έχουμε ανθρώπους που θέλουν να συνδέονται με την Ελλάδα και να προσφέρουν στη μητέρα πατρίδα.»

Ιδιαίτερη αναφορά έκανε στη σημασία της ελληνικής γλώσσας ως θεμελιώδους στοιχείου της ταυτότητας και της σύνδεσης του απανταχού ελληνισμού, καθώς και στη σημαντική επιτυχία της αναγνώρισης από την UNESCO της Παγκόσμιας Ημέρας Ελληνικής Γλώσσας, ως αναγνώριση της συμβολής της ελληνικής γλώσσας στον παγκόσμιο πολιτισμό.

Παράλληλα, αναφέρθηκε στις νέες πρωτοβουλίες που αναπτύσσονται στους τομείς της επιστήμης, της τεχνολογίας, της καινοτομίας και της δημόσιας διπλωματίας, με στόχο την ενίσχυση των δεσμών μεταξύ της Ελλάδας και των Ελλήνων του εξωτερικού.

Στο BrainReGain πιστεύουμε ότι η σχέση με τη Διασπορά δεν αφορά μόνο τον επαναπατρισμό. Αφορά τη δημιουργία ισχυρών, διαρκών και αμφίδρομων δεσμών που ενισχύουν τη συνεργασία, τη γνώση, την εξωστρέφεια και τη συλλογική πρόοδο της χώρας.

Η σύνδεση είναι δύναμη. Και ο Ελληνισμός, όπου κι αν βρίσκεται, αποτελεί αναπόσπαστο μέρος του μέλλοντος της Ελλάδας.

The Secretary General for Greeks Abroad and Public Diplomacy at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ms. Maira Myrogianni, visited Alexandroupoli on 5–6 June, where she participated in the 1st International Meeting of UNESCO Chairs, entitled “Academic Diplomacy and Its Contribution to Achieving the 2020–2030 Sustainable Development Agenda Goals.” The event was co-organized by the Secretariat General for Greeks Abroad and Public Diplomacy, the Hellenic National Commission for UNESCO, the Democritus University of Thrace, and the University's UNESCO Chair on Conservation and Ecotourism of Riparian and Deltaic Ecosystems.

As part of the event, Ms. Myrogianni delivered the keynote address at the event marking World Environment Day, where she highlighted the importance of academic and scientific diplomacy in addressing complex global challenges, including those related to environmental protection. She also referred to the role of the Secretariat in coordinating the activities of the relevant departments of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Greece’s Permanent Delegation to UNESCO, as well as its close cooperation with the Hellenic National Commission for UNESCO.

In addition, the Secretary General visited Didymoteicho, where she attended the signing of a Memorandum of Cooperation between the Municipality of Didymoteicho and the UNESCO Chair on “Digital Culture, Smart Cities and Advanced Digital Technologies” of the University of Piraeus. Ms. Myrogianni congratulated the Mayor of Didymoteicho, Mr. Romylos Chatzigiannoglou, and the holder of the UNESCO Chair at the University of Piraeus, Professor Dimitrios Vergados, on this initiative. She noted that the Secretariat General supports the decentralization of Public Diplomacy initiatives that enhance extroversion, foster broad partnerships, and strengthen networking among institutions, as they create new opportunities and prospects while contributing to sustainable development with multiplier effects.
