🇬🇷 🇵🇹 This week Reading Greece pays tribute to Greek-Portuguese literary encounters. Within this framework, Reading Greece spoke to distinguished translator Athena Psillia who has translated more than 45 Portuguese books into Greek, among which a large part of the works of the Nobel laureate José Saramago.

"I believe that my original motive for translating Portuguese literature was exactly that: I was passionate about Portuguese literature and culture, and I needed to share my passion. here are also some very passionate people working in the cultural sectors of both the Embassies of Portugal and Brazil; they have been very resourceful and imaginative with the events they host, and I participate whenever I can."

📌It was on 24 November 1922 that distinguished Greek writer and translator Aris Alexandrou was born.

His presence in contemporary Greek letters was strongly felt in his distinguished translations of poetry and fiction from Russian, French, and English, in his powerful verse, and finally- in the capstone of his career- the emblematic novel, Mission Box, considered one of the major classics of the 20th century Greek literature, distinguished for its exceptionally elaborate prose.

Regarded as a masterpiece of modern Greek literature, Aris Alexandrou’s Mission Box [To Kivotio, 1974] is maybe the most interesting novel of one of the most traumatic political events in the modern Greek history, the Civil War that followed World War II.Symbolically powerful, incisively poetic, Mission Box is a Kafkaesque Odyssey of yearning and disillusionment, aspiration and despair. Brimming with existential and ideological implications, Ιt is a memorable literary experience, a telling allegory of issues, which have a continuing impact on our lives.
