🏛 Election of Greece to the Committee for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict
Greece was elected to the UNESCO Hague Convention Committee (Second Protocol) for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict, on December 2, 2025, in Paris. This is a committee of major geopolitical importance and universal cultural significance.
Greece was first in vote, receiving 79 of the 85 valid votes cast by the member-states of the Convention. The other five members elected yesterday are Azerbaijan, Chile, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Jordan, and Iran. There are six more members in the committee, whose term of office expires in 2027.
On the occasion of Greece’s election, Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni made the following statement: “Today, Greece was triumphantly elected a member of the Intergovernmental Committee of the Second Protocol to the 1954 Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict. The purpose of the Committee is to raise awareness among states and their peoples regarding the prevention and suppression of issues related to the protection of cultural property that arise in war-affected areas. As archaeological sites and monuments of global cultural heritage are being destroyed due to armed conflicts in our wider region, our country’s election to the Committee is of paramount importance."
"The fact that the Greek candidacy received 79 votes out of a total of 85 voters constitutes recognition of the international initiatives that Greece has undertaken in recent years in the field of Culture, as well as of our country’s broader dynamic presence within UNESCO. I would like to congratulate and thank the staff of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Culture for their methodical and systematic work within the framework of the International Organization, as well as the Head of the Permanent Delegation of Greece to UNESCO, Giorgos Koumoutsakos, and the members of the Delegation for their substantial cooperation and contribution.”
