The 1st International Symposium of Theological Faculties of the Universities of Balamand (Lebanon), Thessaloniki, and Athens, on the central theme: ‘Antioch and Early Christianity. From the Apostolic Kerygma to the Faith of Nicaea’, was successfully held in May in Thessaloniki, thanks to the systematic efforts of the Directorate for Religious and Ecclesiastical Affairs of the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

This international theological symposium of great importance was held from May 6 to 8, 2025 at the University of Thessaloniki, as part of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs program “Strengthening Greek language learning and supporting theological studies at the Saint John of Damascus Institute of Theology of the University of Balamand in Lebanon”, inaugurated in 2022.

The main objective of this program is to promote the historical continuity of Hellenism in the region of Lebanon and Syria, and aims to establish an annual theological conference, co-financed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the above-mentioned universities.

The symposium brought together professors from the three theological schools, as well as students, clergy and other conference participants.

Maira Myrogianni, Secretary General for Greeks Abroad and Public Diplomacy at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, emphasized the Greek government's commitment to highlighting our country's historic role in the Middle East, while stressing the particular importance of the Patriarchate of Antioch in this context. The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Ioannis-Michael Loverdos also addressed the conference via a video message.

The International Symposium came to a successful close on Thursday May 8, with the prospect of similar meetings in Greece and Lebanon.
