Porto Lago / Lakki: a 1930’s model town in the Aegean

On the island of Leros in the Dodecanese archipelago of the Aegean Sea you can find a strange town that looks like an old movie set. This is the town of Lakki, or Porto Lago as it was originally called when it was built in the 1930s, during the Italian occupation of the Dodecanese. Some of its buildings have been declared monuments by the Ministry of Culture and Sports.

The Greek Parliament approved new legislation allowing Greeks living abroad to vote by post in national elections, starting from the next national elections. Voters abroad will be able to choose whether to vote by mail or in person at polling stations abroad, making the process more accessible. The proposal to create a separate electoral constituency for the Greek Diaspora with three MPs was also approved. However, it did not receive the required two-thirds majority and therefore will not apply in the upcoming elections.
