Porto Lago / Lakki: a 1930’s model town in the Aegean

On the island of Leros in the Dodecanese archipelago of the Aegean Sea you can find a strange town that looks like an old movie set. This is the town of Lakki, or Porto Lago as it was originally called when it was built in the 1930s, during the Italian occupation of the Dodecanese. Some of its buildings have been declared monuments by the Ministry of Culture and Sports.

In 1958, Nikos Hadjikyriakos-Ghika embarked on a journey from West to East; India was the second major stop, with many of his drawings being inspired by it.
The exhibition "Ghika: A Journey to India" was inaugurated at the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi, India (NGMA). It is a collaboration between the The Benaki Museum, the NGMA, and the Embassy of Greece in India, with the support of the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs | Η Ελλάδα στον Κόσμο and the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, and features twenty-seven drawings along with archive material and video/animation.
